Remember Kerry’s claim during the 2004 Presidential campaign that secret plans were in the making to bring back the draft? As it turns out, the half-wit may have been half-right after all. One slight problem with the prediction, however, was that Kerry claimed that President Bush was the culprit planning to resurrect the draft. It turns out that leading Democrats, and not the Bush Administration, favor reinstating the draft. Democratic Congressman Charles Rangel, the next chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, is proposing a draft of all American 18 year-olds beginning next year.
Kerry's crazy claim was a classic case of “deliberate misdirection.” Blame the President for an unpopular policy that Democrats secretly support. It's another example of Democrats hiding who they really are and what they actually believe until after the election. Then the masks come off. Dwelling on this hypocrisy raises my blood pressure considerably. I had a mind to write an inflammatory article on the topic and was set to do so, only to come across Michelle Malkin’s excellent post, “Draft-mongering Dems.” Referring to the fake media hysteria concerning the phony Democrat 2004 claims of an impending Bush-supported draft, Malkin states:
Bogus draft e-mails spread across campuses. CBS and NBC ran alarmist pieces without disclosing the anti-war biases of their supposedly neutral interview subjects.
And now, after all that anti-Bush sound and fury, we have the incoming Democrat chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee proposing what all those fear-mongers claimed a GOP administration would do. Where are all the cluck-cluckers now?
Rangel's proposal will go where it has gone every other time he has proposed it: Nowhere.
It's a fitting symbol of what Democrat rule in Congress will be the next two years: A worthless, cynical expenditure of time and energy that accomplishes absolutely nothing.
